Skardu travel guide
Skardu is the main town of Baltistan in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, set on a wide valley where the Indus and Shigar rivers meet. At about 2,228 metres above sea level and surrounded by some of the highest mountains on earth, it is the starting point for expeditions to K2, Broad Peak, the Gasherbrums and Masherbrum, but it is also an easy and rewarding destination for regular travelers, families and photographers.
Within a short drive of town you can visit blue lakes, a high-altitude cold desert, a historic fort and quiet orchard villages. With a little more time you can add the wildflower plains of Deosai National Park, the peaceful Basho Valley, Shigar and Khaplu. The scenery changes with every season, from apricot blossom in spring to green valleys in summer and gold in autumn.
KayinaatTrip is a local tour operator based in Skardu. Our Skardu tour packages include planned transport, hotels or camping, and local guides who know the roads, weather and best viewpoints. Every itinerary can be adjusted to your dates, budget and group size.

Sightseeing
These are the places most travelers include in a Skardu tour, from easy half-day stops in town to longer valley trips. Your itinerary can mix any of them.
Shangrila, on the shore of Lower Kachura Lake, is probably the most photographed place in Skardu. It is known for its clear blue lake, red-roofed resort buildings and orchards, and it makes a relaxed first stop for lake views, a walk and tea by the water. Go in the morning or late afternoon for the best light.
Upper Kachura Lake is larger and quieter than Lower Kachura, set in a bowl of mountains and reached by a short drive and walk from the road. It is a good place for photography, a picnic and an easy hike, and is usually visited together with Shangrila on the same half day.
Close to Skardu town and the airport, the cold desert is a stretch of sand dunes surrounded by snow-capped mountains. It is one of the most unusual landscapes in Pakistan. Sunset is the best time to visit, and in summer you can combine it with a jeep ride on the dunes.
Kharpocho, meaning "king of forts" in Balti, stands on a rocky hill above Skardu town. The old fort is partly ruined, but the climb rewards you with wide views over the Indus River, the city and the surrounding valley. It is a good stop to understand the history of Baltistan.
Sadpara (Satpara) Lake is a short drive from Skardu and is the starting point of the road up to Deosai. Its calm blue water makes a pleasant photo stop on the way to or from the plateau.
Manthokha is a scenic waterfall in the Baltistan region, popular as a day trip when roads are in good condition. Check the route and weather with your guide before you go.
A large rock carved with Buddhist figures, a reminder of the days when Buddhism was practiced across Baltistan. It is a short cultural stop that fits easily into a day of Skardu sightseeing.
About 4,000 metres above sea level, Deosai is a huge summer plateau of wildflowers, streams and Sheosar Lake, and a habitat of the Himalayan brown bear. Plan at least a full day, or better, a camping night. See our full Deosai guide for details.
Shigar is a green valley with orchards, old houses and the restored Shigar Fort. It is also the road toward Askole, the last village before the great Baltoro treks to K2. Shigar can be visited as a day trip from Skardu.
Khaplu, further east, is known for its historic palace and mosque, quiet villages and mountain views. It is a longer drive from Skardu, so many travelers stay a night or two. A great add-on for 7 to 10 day trips.

Adventure
Skardu is the traditional starting point for expeditions and treks to K2, the second highest mountain in the world, as well as Broad Peak, the Gasherbrum peaks and the Baltoro Glacier. Most trekking routes leave Skardu by jeep through Shigar to Askole, the last village on the road, and continue on foot.
Treks such as K2 Base Camp and Concordia are serious, multi-day journeys that need proper preparation, permits, experienced guides and porters. If you are not ready for a long trek, easier day hikes and viewpoints around Skardu, Shigar and Deosai give you big mountain scenery without the expedition.
Local life
Try Balti specialties such as chapshuro (meat-filled flatbread) and mamtu (steamed dumplings), along with fresh and dried apricots, walnuts, apricot oil and local tea. Hotels also serve standard Pakistani dishes if you prefer familiar food.
Baltistan has a warm, hospitable culture with strong Tibetan and Central Asian influences in its language, architecture and history. Dress modestly in villages, ask before photographing people, and be respectful at mosques and religious sites.
Dried apricots, apricot products, woollen goods, handicrafts and gemstones are popular souvenirs in Skardu's bazaar. Bargain politely and buy from established shops.
Skardu was once the center of a Balti kingdom, and forts such as Kharpocho and Shigar, along with Buddhist rock carvings, show how the region's history developed over centuries.
Getting there
The fastest way is a domestic flight from Islamabad to Skardu, usually about an hour with views of the Himalaya and Karakoram. Flights depend on weather, so keep a spare day in your plan and avoid very tight connections.
By road, the route follows the Karakoram Highway via Chilas and Gilgit, then the Skardu road along the Indus. It is a long, scenic journey that usually takes more than a day from Islamabad. Landslides can cause delays, especially during the monsoon.
We can arrange airport pickup, private vehicles for the road journey and onward transport to all destinations in your package.
Accommodation
Skardu offers a range of stays, from simple guesthouses to comfortable hotels and lakeside resorts. Camping is also popular in places like Deosai and near some lakes.
Simple, clean rooms in or near the town center. Good for backpackers and small budgets.
Comfortable rooms with attached bathrooms and meals, usually with valley views. Best value for most families and groups.
Lakeside resorts around Kachura for a scenic stay, and tented camping for a wilderness night. Book early in peak summer.
